Certainly our nation is in despair. Every day I find it harder and harder to run across anybody who is happy. Even those who appear insulated from the world around us sour when anything involving current events is brought up. For the left, the destruction of our nation is not proceeding fast enough. For the right… well, so many are resigned to the idea it will take a second civil war to “fix” things.
Meanwhile those who many call our “leaders”, mostly individuals we citizens elect to represent us – range from wanting to further drive us all to our knees to stumping for the next election so they can regain power. If you are like me, you have a sinking feeling November will herald the same ol’ same ol’ as the song says “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. In other words, it will be time to change the lipstick on the pig. If any of this rings true to you, your thoughts may well be drifting back to the title… IS it too late for our nation?
Most of the people I talk to about the state of our nation more or less throw up their hands. “What can anyone do”? Some may nod in assent while I’m on my soapbox talking about how we are self-governing citizens in a Constitutional Republic who were born with the authority to make things right. Typically, the next words out of their mouths is “it will never happen”. One saying comes to mind in response to this:
“Whether you think you can or think you can’t... you’re right.” - Henry Ford
What If Our Government Was Our Goliath?
Think on that for a moment. Goliath was a giant after all. He was a warrior. In fact he was the champion of the Philistines. He was massive. He was fierce. He was invincible… or so thought his opponents. All except one – a young boy named David. He was fifteen according to some speculation. You know the story. He did it without the latest and greatest weaponry. He shunned the King’s armor. In the end it was just him and Goliath… and a rock. Goliath didn’t stand a chance. Why?
1 Samuel 17:26 David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying... for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God? (World English Bible)
1 Samuel 17:37 David said, Yahweh who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, Go, and Yahweh shall be with you. (World English Bible)
David trusted God and God delivered him and Israel. That is why Goliath was defeated. Granted, we cannot all be David who is described as “a man after God’s own heart” but we don’t have to be. God wasn’t just David’s God. He was Israel’s God. He is OUR God. Goliath's defeat is just one example of God’s deliverance. Scripture has many, many more. And God’s deliverance does not end with Scripture. He delivers His children and even those who are not His children every single day. The very last verse in the Book of John states:
John 21:25 There are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they would all be written, I suppose that even the world itself wouldn't have room for the books that would be written. (World English Bible)
That was just Jesus, in his lifetime, possibly only in his ministry lasting, at most, three years.
If we were able to grasp the scope of those things God does every moment of every day, it would likely blow our minds. Not all of them are on the scale of parting the Red Sea or raising Jesus from the dead. Some things might and often do go unnoticed. Even so, God works in our lives every day, day in and day out.
So what if our government is our Goliath? God is bigger than both of them. He loves us. He can and will deliver us. All we need do is ask.
Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.
8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?
11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (World English Bible)
In Moses’ time God brought the most powerful ruler in the world to his knees.
Exodus 7:3 I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt.
4 But Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Egypt, and bring forth my armies, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.
5 The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh, when I stretch forth my hand on Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”
The events happened this way because this is how God wanted them to happen. Do you think otherwise? It wasn’t enough to rescue the Israelite’s, Egypt was to know who Yahweh was!
This same God who brought Israel out of Egypt and defeated Goliath by the hand of David is the very same God who loves us. It is the same God by whose hand our nation was established, blessed and rose to become the richest and most powerful nation on earth. None of this was done without God’s approval and blessing.
Now I cannot tell you God’s plan for our nation. I am no prophet. I am a mere man who has confessed Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9,10) That said, I do believe God would deliver our nation if we would simply ask and act on this belief. Today, in this very day and age, we have an opportunity the world has never known before. We have a constitutional republic and we have the resources to operate it as it was intended to operate – as a representative government free of the shackles of politics. Consider this:
Anyone. ANY ONE can set up a web page in minutes. This can be done for free or for very little cost. In most parts of this nation, anyone can be elected to any office by a write-in vote. What does this mean to you and me? We don’t need political parties. We have lightning fast communications at our fingertips and the ability to address everyone within any voting division instantly. Now for the drawbacks.
The average congressional district here in Virginia is about 750,000 people. Obviously it would be impossible to talk to each and every voter in any one district.
Moreover if 100 people opted to start a write-in campaign to run for a congressional seat, chaos could easily result. It would be messy, to say the least and a chore for voters to wade through all those running to choose one. On the plus side, each citizen would have a more or less equal chance of being heard. At some point, one or more people would find a way to display all of those running on a single website.
Without parties to build a “platform” for candidates to “stand” on, choices would no longer be simple. On the other hand, those who vied for an office would have to state in plain English what they stood for.
I am sure there are more pros and cons. The biggest advantage I see at this point is real people could run for offices instead of those who “know the right person”. My hope is we’d be able to more easily spot and thus weed out the corrupt.
In addition to the above, I’d like to see our governments run on a more local level. This is why I often advocate taking back our nation county by county. We can all venture to our respective county seats. At the much more intimate county level we can have a better feel for how decisions affect us.
These are just my thoughts. I’m only one man. The entire point of a constitutional republic is we all have equal say and we are all equally protected under the law of the land. We cannot be voted out of our rights unless we agree to change the constitution and then only with a supermajority.
The Giant we are facing is really just a paper tiger, if that. WE are the government. The controllers, the authoritarians, want us to forget that or become too afraid or despondent to claim what is rightfully ours – the very authority THEY have usurped!
Our words, the words of our Constitution and the Word of God are far more powerful than their words. Do not be fooled, they wield their wordly weapons with great skill. They are practiced deceivers. They have no shame, no conscience. Logic is their enemy. Truth is their nemesis. They have no qualms about saying one thing today and the exact opposite tomorrow as long as it suits their agenda. Even so truth reigns supreme. It is infallible and shines above their lies. Light dispels darkness every time.
It is not too late for our nation! How do I know? Because our Constitution still stands and as long as our Constitution is recognized as the law of our land, WE the PEOPLE hold the reins of power as self-governing citizens. All we need do is stand together to claim our rightful place in this nation.
